Walking with a smile & fabulous shoes!

I walk to work every day; It has become part of my morning ritual to prepare myself for the day.

When I first started my daily walk, my head would be down, and my focus would be on my fabulous Leopold print shoes or my phone.

As the weeks passed, I reminded myself that I was far from mindful. And for those of you who are one of my clients, you know mindfulness is something I'm always banging on about...

I lifted my head and began to take note of my surroundings and enjoy my walk.

As time passed, I found people began to engage with me, “Good morning, it's a great day for it.” typical Aussie communication of saying nothing and everything all at once.

To my own surprise, I began to find myself initiating the interactions.

I was smiling more, feeling better and noticing all the beautiful things, people, and places surrounding me.

My fabulous shoes were no longer my focus but ironically became the focus of one of the friendly faces that shared their morning with me.

A friendly good morning turned to an: “oh, I love your shoes; they are fabulous”

This moment set a positive tone for my day, and tho I can't speak for my fellow pavement buddies, I was walking taller and being only 5 feet; I needed all the extra “taller” I could get.

However, my approachability and general happy mood were not due to magical, fabulous shoes.

I was just more present and feeling grateful, and that was radiating outward. Happy is a state of mind, not a pair of shoes.

How to Prioritise Self-Care When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

When life is feeling overwhelming, it can be hard to prioritise taking care of yourself. That’s why it’s important to make self-care a priority, even in the most stressful times. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips for how to practice self-care when you’re feeling overwhelmed, such as reaching out to a counsellor or engaging in activities that bring you joy. Self-care is not only necessary for your mental health, but also essential for feeling more balanced and refreshed. We hope that these tips can help you prioritise self-care when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Define What Self-Care Means to You

Self-care means different things to different people. It is the practice of looking after your physical, mental and emotional health, while also maintaining relationships with others. It can include anything from taking time for yourself to meditating, spending time in nature or getting enough rest and learning how to cope with difficult emotions such as anger, grief, or loss in healthy ways. Self-care is about taking the time to do things that make you feel happy, loved and supported.

Schedule Time for Yourself

Making time for yourself is a key element of self-care. It’s important to ensure that you are scheduling in “me-time” and carving out dedicated time for yourself each day. This can include activities such as reading a book, watching a movie, meditating, going for a walk, or just sitting with your thoughts. It’s a great way to restore your energy and take care of your emotional needs.

It is also essential to keep track of your relationships with friends and family, making sure you’re taking the time to nurture these connections. Whether it’s scheduling lunch dates, catching up on the phone, or texting a friend, these interactions can help you feel connected and supported in times of stress or grief.

Check in with yourself when it comes to anger and loss. Take the time to assess how you’re feeling and work through any difficult emotions that may arise. For example, it can be helpful to try mindful breathing exercises or journaling to process your emotions.

By scheduling in time for yourself, you’re making sure that your needs come first and that you’re taking the necessary steps to take care of your mental health.

Set Realistic Goals

When it comes to self-care, it is essential to set realistic goals that you can actually accomplish. While setting ambitious goals, remember to make them attainable. Trying to accomplish too much all at once can lead to burnout and disappointment. Make sure to set realistic goals that are achievable within a given time frame.

If you have a goal of meditating every day for 10 minutes, start by doing it for 5 minutes and gradually increase your practice as you become more comfortable with the process. If your goal is to take a relaxing bath each night, start by taking one once a week and work your way up from there. Don’t overwhelm yourself with trying to do too much all at once; instead, focus on making small, manageable changes to your self-care routine.

When setting realistic goals, be mindful of what you are capable of doing in any given moment. Consider your current mental, physical, and emotional capacity when creating new goals or making changes to your self-care routine. It’s ok to take breaks or adjust your goals if needed. Self-care should never feel like a chore or obligation; it should be something that brings you joy and helps you feel refreshed and energised.

Do Something Every Day

When it comes to self-care, make sure you're doing something for yourself every day. That doesn't necessarily mean setting aside an hour a day for a bubble bath and meditation; it can be as simple as taking five minutes out of your day to do something that you enjoy.

Here are some ideas for things to do every day that can help you prioritise self-care:

• Read a book or listen to an audiobook

• Write in a journal

• Take a walk or exercise

• Play an instrument

• Spend time with friends or family

• Practice yoga or stretching

• Paint or draw

• Take a hot bath

• Watch a movie or TV show

• Make something delicious

• Listen to music

• Explore nature

• Do some online shopping

• Try a new recipe

• Unplug and meditate

• Take a class or try something new

The key is to find activities that will make you feel relaxed, inspired, and fulfilled. Doing something positive for yourself each day can have lasting positive impacts on your mental health.

Let Go of Perfectionism

Perfectionism is a common trait among those struggling with mental health issues, and it can have a damaging effect on both your mental and physical wellbeing. It's important to realise that perfectionism isn’t realistic and that it can be detrimental to your overall health. To be healthy and happy, and focus on making progress instead of aiming for perfection.

Instead of trying to do everything perfectly, focus on taking small steps forward. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Acknowledge what went well and what could be improved, rather than harping on the imperfections.

When you make mistakes or don't achieve something perfectly, don't beat yourself up about it. Know that mistakes are part of the learning process, and give yourself grace to learn and grow from the experience. Remind yourself that it's okay to make mistakes and that you're still a valuable person regardless.

Finally, remember that perfection is subjective. What one person may find perfect, another may not. Don't compare yourself to others—be kind and patient with yourself and your journey.

By letting go of perfectionism, you can create more balance in your life and focus on living in the present moment. You'll be more productive and effective, while also giving yourself time to relax and enjoy the beauty of life.

Seek Professional Help

When feeling overwhelmed, it can be hard to take care of yourself and your mental health. It is important to remember that seeking professional help is an important part of taking care of yourself. Professional help can come in many forms including therapy, counselling, or medication management.

Therapy: Therapy is a form of professional help that allows you to explore the issues and feelings you may be struggling with. During therapy sessions, you will talk with a therapist who can listen to your concerns, help you develop coping strategies, and offer advice for how to better handle stressful situations.

Counselling: Counselling is another form of professional help which focuses on helping you develop skills to cope with challenging situations. A counsellor can provide support, advice, and guidance during times of stress.

When it comes to seeking professional help, you should remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Everyone has different needs and circumstances, and it is essential to find a professional who meets your specific needs. Seeking professional help is an important part of prioritising self-care and taking care of your mental health.

Why Everyone Deserves to Love Themselves

It is often said that loving yourself is the most important thing. But why should everyone prioritize self-love? It can be hard to put yourself first and do things that make you happy. However, it is so important that everyone take the time to love and care for themselves. It may sound funny initially, but self-love is a real need everyone deserves to fulfil.

What is self-love, and why is it important?

Self-love is the act of appreciating, accepting, and valuing oneself. It is the practice of treating yourself with kindness, compassion, and respect. It means recognizing your worth and understanding that you deserve love and happiness.

Self-love is important because it sets the foundation for our overall well-being and quality of life. When we love ourselves, we prioritize our own needs and make choices that align with our values and goals. It allows us to set healthy boundaries, prioritise self-care, and make decisions that are in our best interest.

The importance of self-love goes beyond just taking care of ourselves physically and emotionally. It also has a profound impact on our mental health. When we love ourselves, we cultivate a positive mindset and develop resilience. We become more confident, assertive, and better equipped to handle life's challenges.

Moreover, self-love allows us to establish a fulfilling and satisfying relationship with ourselves. It is about embracing who we are, flaws and all, and celebrating our unique qualities and strengths. When we have a strong sense of self-love, we become less reliant on external validation and find fulfilment from within.

Ultimately, self-love is about recognizing that we are the most crucial person in our lives. It is about cherishing and nourishing ourselves because what could be more important than the love of our own life? So, let's prioritize self-love and make it a daily practice that supports our overall well-being.

The impact of self-love on mental health

The importance of self-love cannot be understated regarding mental health. When we prioritize our own well-being and happiness, we create a strong foundation for our mental and emotional health. Loving ourselves means acknowledging our worth and treating ourselves with kindness and compassion. It means caring for our physical and emotional needs, setting healthy boundaries, and practising self-care. We are better equipped to manage stress, build resilience, and navigate life's challenges when we love ourselves. After all, if we don't love ourselves and prioritize our own happiness, what could be more important?

Society's Role in promoting self-love

Society plays a significant role in shaping our beliefs and values, including how we view ourselves. Unfortunately, many societal messages and standards promote self-criticism and self-doubt, making it difficult for individuals to love themselves. However, promoting self-love is crucial because like what could be more important than loving the person you spend the most time with- the love of your own life? It's essential for society to normalize self-love and emphasize the importance of keeping yourself a priority. By doing so, we can create a culture that supports individuals in their journey towards self-love and empowerment.

Self-love as a form of empowerment

When you genuinely love yourself, you become empowered. You begin to take control of your life and make decisions that benefit you. Keeping yourself a priority means recognizing your worth and treating yourself with the love and respect that you deserve. When you prioritize self-love, you learn to set boundaries and say no to things that do not align with your values and goals.

The love of your own life is one of the most important relationships you will ever have. It sets the foundation for how you interact with others and how you view yourself. When you have a strong sense of self-love, you are less likely to tolerate harmful or toxic relationships. Instead, you will surround yourself with people who lift you up and support your growth.

Self-love is not selfish; it's necessary. It's like oxygen for your soul. You become more confident, resilient, and happy when you love yourself. You are more likely to take risks and pursue your passions. You learn to embrace your strengths and weaknesses and become comfortable with who you are.

So, what could be more important than loving yourself? It's the foundation for a fulfilling and joyful life. Remember, self-love is not a destination; it's a journey. It takes time and effort, but it's worth it. Make self-love a daily practice and watch how it transforms your life.

Overcoming challenges in practising self-love

While practising self-love is essential, it can be challenging for some. One of the biggest obstacles is overcoming negative self-talk and self-criticism. We often focus on our flaws and imperfections, making it difficult to love ourselves fully. Additionally, comparing ourselves to others can make us feel inadequate. It's important to remember that everyone has their own journey, and comparing ourselves to others is counterproductive. Lastly, making time for ourselves can be difficult, but prioritizing self-care is crucial for practising self-love. At the end of the day, practising self-love may be challenging, but what could be more important than loving ourselves?

Self-love is a journey, not a destination.

Self-love cannot be achieved overnight or checked off a to-do list. It is a lifelong journey of learning, growth, and self-discovery. Embracing self-love means understanding that it is a continuous process of self-care and acceptance. It involves acknowledging our flaws, embracing our strengths, and prioritizing our own well-being. Self-love requires patience, compassion, and commitment to ourselves. It is an ongoing practice that evolves as we evolve. Because, at the end of the day, nothing is more important than loving and accepting ourselves for who we indeed are.

Ways to cultivate self-love in daily life

Self-love can sometimes feel like an elusive concept, but it's important to remember that it's a journey rather than a destination. There are simple yet impactful ways to cultivate self-love in our daily lives:

1. Practice gratitude: Take time to reflect on what you're grateful for. It's easy to focus on what we lack, but shifting our attention to what we have can boost our self-esteem and promote a positive outlook.

2. Treat yourself kindly: We often talk to ourselves in ways that we wouldn't talk to our friends or loved ones. Treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion you would offer others.

3. Engage in activities you enjoy: Taking time to do things that make you happy can be a form of self-care. Whether it's reading a book, taking a bubble bath, or going for a walk in nature, prioritize activities that bring you joy.

4. Set healthy boundaries: Saying no to things that don't serve us and setting boundaries in our relationships can help us maintain a healthy sense of self-worth and self-respect.

Remember, self-love isn't selfish. In fact, it's necessary for our well-being. What could be more important than investing in ourselves and our happiness?

CBT

Understanding Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): A Path to Positive Change

In today's fast-paced and demanding world, it is common for individuals to experience stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Fortunately, various therapeutic approaches can help people overcome these difficulties and lead fulfilling lives. One such approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a widely recognized and effective method that combines cognitive and behavioral techniques. In this blog post, we will explore the principles of CBT, its benefits, and how it can empower individuals to make lasting positive changes.

Understanding Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

CBT is a psychotherapeutic approach that focuses on identifying and changing negative patterns of thinking and behavior. It operates under the premise that our thoughts influence our emotions and actions, therefore affecting our overall well-being. By targeting maladaptive thought patterns or cognitive distortions, CBT aims to modify unhealthy behaviors and improve emotional well-being.

Key Principles of CBT:

1. The Cognitive Model: CBT emphasizes the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It proposes that distorted or irrational thoughts contribute to negative emotions and problematic behaviors.

2. Collaborative Approach: CBT fosters a collaborative relationship between therapists and clients. Therapists work with their clients as equal partners in understanding their challenges, setting goals, developing strategies, and evaluating progress.

3. Focus on Present Moment: While acknowledging past experiences' impact on current problems, CBT primarily concentrates on addressing present difficulties rather than delving extensively into one's history.

4. Skills Development: CBT equips individuals with practical skills to identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more realistic ones. These skills empower individuals to challenge negative beliefs independently even after therapy concludes.

Benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:

1. Effective Treatment for Various Mental Health Issues: Extensive research supports the efficacy of CBT in treating numerous mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, and substance abuse.

2. Short-Term and Time-Limited: Compared to other forms of therapy, CBT is often more focused and time-limited. Many individuals experience significant improvements within a relatively short period, typically between 12 to 20 sessions.

3. Empowerment and Self-Management: CBT empowers individuals by teaching them skills to manage their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors independently. This self-management aspect enhances long-term well-being beyond the therapy room.

4. Holistic Approach: While primarily targeting cognitive distortions, CBT also addresses behavioural patterns that perpetuate distress or dysfunction. By modifying both thinking and behavior, CBT promotes comprehensive personal growth.

Quote from an Expert:

As Dr. Aaron Beck, the founder of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, once stated:

"Cognitive therapy seeks to alleviate psychological stresses by correcting faulty conceptions and self-signals."

Incorporating CBT into Your Life:

While working with a trained therapist is ideal for experiencing the full benefits of CBT, there are strategies individuals can implement in their daily lives to support their mental well-being:

1. Mindfulness Practice: Engage in mindfulness exercises to develop awareness of your thoughts without judgment. This practice helps you identify negative thought patterns and work on changing them.

2. Journaling: Write down your thoughts and feelings regularly to gain insights into recurring patterns or triggers that contribute to distressing emotions.

3. Challenge Negative Thoughts: When faced with negative thoughts or self-doubt, consciously challenge them by seeking evidence against these beliefs and replacing them with positive affirmations.

4. Behavioral Activation: Engage in activities that bring you joy or a sense of accomplishment even when you don't feel like it. Taking action can help shift your mood positively.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy offers a practical framework for understanding how our thoughts impact our emotions and behaviors. By addressing cognitive distortions and modifying unhealthy patterns, CBT empowers individuals to make positive changes in their lives. Whether seeking therapy or implementing self-help strategies, integrating the principles of CBT can lead to improved mental well-being and a more fulfilling life journey.
